Just like summer, jazz festival season has come to an end. But there’s still plenty of live jazz music to be heard all across the city. Check out these great series continuing throughout 2009 – 2010.

Old Mill Inn
Thursdays are the new Fridays at the Old Mill Inn when jazz dominates the Home Smith Bar. Join Russ Little every Thursday night, return on Fridays for the Outstanding Jazz Vocalist Series or be entertained as Piano Masters take over on Saturday nights.

Billy Bragg – November 17

Okay, we know it’s not quite exactly jazz but this is still one show that is worth every penny.

Its been 25 years since Billy Bragg first started visiting our shores and we’ve been in love with him ever since. Blending elements of folk music, punk rock and protest songs, this talented musician leaves no stone unturned. He’s also been involved with grassroots political movements, which is often reflected in his lyrics.

With his first book, The Progressive Patriot, an eloquent protest against the extremist British National Party, behind his belt, it’s refreshing to see an artist and performer who’s still keeping it real.

Don’t miss the inspiring Billy Bragg this winter!

Can You Help ?-Brass band instruments (2nd hand) for South African Youth Uplifment Project‏

Dear Sir/Madam

Greetings from South African Brass Banding, although I hasten to add that it is very thin on the ground!

With regard to seeking your kind assistance, this being for donations of old (even broken) brass instruments. The information attached refers to poor resources, social deprivation, drug and crime problems etc. However, we wish to emphasise the positive, which is that young people are being helped through brass groups (plus sport and other activities).

As an ex-Grenadier Guards musician, ex-Salvation Army Bandmaster, and now retired Navy Director of Music, I know the power of brass music to enrich lives, uplift spirits and, in Southern Africa, to actually save young people from the worst of things to the best.

Please take a few moments to read the attached and also to pass on to others who may be able to help.

Mr Peter Pollard has signed the deal with Mr Robert Kvam of Blanke Missingen to be the exclusive dealer for POLLARD PRODUCTS in Norway.

Robert trained as a repairer & maker under Mr Pollard at MIR Academy,Moss Norway.

Robert also being a Fine trumpet player himself and plays on a custom built POLLARD TRUMPET & FLUGEL HORN.

Dear All,

If anyone (on the Isle of Man) is interested in having some booster lessons when I am back home during the summer break, please get in touch with me to discuss.

I can help to develop high register playing and stamina as well as helping to improve general musicianship. Tuition is charged at an hourly rate of £20 (in accordance with UK Musician’s Union).

Russell

Russell is an up-and-coming young trumpet player with a special interest in period instruments. Now heading towards his fourth year at the Royal Northern College of Music, Russell studies modern trumpet with Tracey Redfern and John Miller and historical brass instruments with David Staff. He is also training to be a teacher in his studies at the RNCM.

As a soloist, Russell has performed recitals with both piano and organ and has given concerto performances with the Manx Youth Orchestra. He has also performed such works as Handel’s Messiah, with the Northern Freelance Orchestra and Manchester Baroque.

Russell has given numerous trumpet and organ recitals with fellow Manxman and RNCM graduate Gareth Moore. He has attended Dartington International Summer School, specialising in early brass and has a keen interest in the resurgence of the true natural trumpet. He has been involved in masterclasses by world-renowned brass players, such as Allen Vizzutti, Tristram Williams, Rod Franks, Christian Lindberg and Håkan Hardenberger.

Mark studied at the Royal Northern College of Music from 1969-1973 and has since enjoyed a successful and varied professional career as a trumpet player with many famous orchestras. He was the lead trumpeter at the Ritz Ballroom, Manchester from 1972-1979, and from 1979-1987 he did several seasons on cruise liners includeding the Cunard ‘Countess’, the ‘Navarino’, the ‘Astor’, and three seasons on the ‘QE2’.

During the 1980’s he played for many theatre shows, and did recordings for TV, radio and films. He was also lead trumpeter for the ‘Shades of Kenton Jazz Orchestra’ from 1983-2003.

In 1988 Mark joined the American Rock group ‘Dr. Hook’ and for two years was constantly touring the world.

Mark leads 3 of his own bands and has played in many prestigious locations in the UK, across Europe and in the USA.

The M. G. Band is a small Function Band able to provide music for all occasions. Weddings, Celebrations, Dances, and Dinner Jazz are just some of the functions this band has played for in the past.

The band has an extensive music library and plays a broad range of styles:

- Modern Pop Music
- Rock & Roll
- Motown & 60’s
- Swing Sinatra Style
- Rat Pack
- Jazz Standards
- Dance

As well as a large collection of Instrumental pieces the band has male and female vocalists, each with their own extensive repertoire of songs.
